The New Course at St. Andrews Links in St. Andrews is not really a new course because it was opened in April 1895. The New Course is probably the oldest “new” course in the world.
The New Course was built because of the increasing demand for golf at St. Andrews from both locals and visitors.
The New Course was definitely difficult. It was a long course with high rough grass and deep bunkers. It was not at all forgiving. Some golfers told us that it was almost as difficult as the Old Course.
If you are going to play at the New Course, you really have to make sure to place your golf ball on the fairways or else risk losing your ball on the rough.
If your ball is in the bunker and it is on the edge of the high area, you have no other way but to play it sideways or else risk losing some shots for being so stubborn trying to get your golf ball out forward direction green.
I am telling you this because I was several times in the bunkers and I really had a hard time getting my golf balls out.
Despite the course being difficult to play, I still enjoyed it. The experience alone was simply great.
And yes, I would like to mention that after the game, we were able to enter St. Andrews Golf Club which was exclusive for members only and take note for men only. There was an area though where women were allowed.
The women’s golf club was separate from the men’s club. Fortunately, we played with a club member and he invited us so we got inside the clubhouse.
St. Andrews Golf Club is not to be mistaken with The Royal And Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews which is definitely exclusive for its special members. Not all members of even St. Andrews Golf Club can just enter The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St. Andrews.
